During this training programme the participants will get acquainted with ideas, techniques and solutions which will be a surplus value for there career. The participants are taught how to measure and assess road (un)safety and road situations in their own country. Moreover, they will be supplied with possible solutions, specifically adapted to the needs of their country. This group of people will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and competences in their own job straight away.
Getting acquainted with experiences from other Asian countries and good examples from Europe is undoubtedly a benefit of this course. This way, they can determine more efficiently what measures can be effective for their own country.

ARRB Group, in association with Queensland Department of Main Roads, is pleased to offer a one day seminar for managers, planners, policy makers and users of HDM-4 and CBA tools, and a further three and a half day 'hands on' workshop for road asset managers and training course for new and current users.
This will be a great opportunity to network with other professionals working in similar roles, update your knowledge and build on your skill in this area. It will also contribute significantly to your ongoing professional development.
Workshop Purpose
- To familiarise practitioners with current best practice in road investment planning and road infrastructure management.
- To communicate a broad appreciation of the structure and application of road investment tools and their application in varying situations to facilitate decision making.
- To explain and apply 'good practice' in configuring, adapting and operating HDM-4 V2 for use in project appraisal, evaluating standards and strategy development, and the preparation of prioritised works programs, having established an appreciation of the underlying principles, models and data strategies.
- To demonstrate the application of QDMR's CBA6 tool in addressing different investment projects.
- To analyse institutional needs and develop and deliver appropriate advice and training programs aimed at achieving sustainable operation of HDM-4 and related decision support tools. This will involve not only the trainers experiences but will include encouraging participants to contribute directly through the development of case studies of their own choice, and bring their own particular issues and experiences for discussion and, in some cases, resolution.

Every 4 years PIARC organizes an international symposium on pavement surface characteristics for roads and airfields, so called SURF events. The main objective of the Symposium is to share and discuss experience about how to improve quality through effective management of road infrastructure assets, in accordance with user expectations and managers' requests. The official languages of the symposium will be English and French, with simultaneous translation. Abstracts must be provided in both languages, whereas final papers can be in either language. Posters, and exhibits in the Symposium booths should, preferably, be prepared in dual-language format. High quality papers and posters that are relevant to the symposium theme are invited. Reports about completed research or research in progress are welcome. All ab-stracts and papers shall be submitted on-line to the symposium website.

The Fourth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF4) will be hosted by the Government of China and will be held in the ancient city of Nanjing from 03-07 November 2008. Under the theme "Emissions and pollution: addressing the challenge", this second conference will examine in more detail the priority themes identified last year. It will examine different ways to tackle emissions and pollutions of water, air, noise and materials. Concrete examples of proven best practices will show the time, research and resources invested by
the road industry into eco-friendly processes and materials. Researchers, policy-makers, practitioners from both the public and the private sector will gather in Geneva to present and discuss inspiring solutions to address the environmental challenge we face today to ensure a better world tomorrow.
The 2nd IRF Conference on Roads and Environment will also host a high level panel discussion on 'Trading on Carbon Markets'. The financial community is offering a number of 'green' investment opportunities. Specialists will investigate the sense and non-sense of these financial instruments, the problems of carbon pricing and the social responsibility of
investors.
